Manu Road is home to one of the most pristine and biodiverse forests in the world, making it a must-visit destination in southern Peru. If you are in Cusco and have limited time to explore this extraordinary region, this tour offers a perfect opportunity to experience its incredible wildlife and natural beauty. Over the course of three days, you will embark on a unique journey, immersing yourself in nature and discovering the unparalleled biodiversity of this remarkable ecosystem.
Day 1: Cusco – Manu Road
We will pick you up early in the morning from your hotel to begin our journey into the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Our 7–8 hour drive over the Andes takes us through picturesque villages, each with its own cultural and economic significance, such as traditional bakeries and places specializing in Peruvian cuisine, including the famous «cuy» (guinea pig).
Before leaving the Andes, we stop for breakfast in the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, once a vital hub for regional trade. From there, we ascend to Ajanaco (3,500 m.a.s.l.), the official entrance to Manu National Park, marking the transition from high-altitude grasslands to the lush cloud forest.
As we descend, the landscape transforms dramatically, revealing a pristine ecosystem teeming with biodiversity. In the afternoon, we visit a Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where we witness the fascinating courtship display of Peru’s national bird, as vibrant males sing and dance in an unforgettable natural spectacle.
Overnight: San Pedro (B:L:D)
Day 2: Machu Wasi Oxbow Lake – Lowland Forest
After a restful night, we continue deeper into the tropical rainforest, enjoying breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. Along the way, we stop at a small orchid garden, where we discover both ornamental and medicinal plants.
Descending further, we arrive at Atalaya, a riverside village where we switch to a motorized canoe for a scenic ride down the Alto Madre de Dios River. This river, which originates in the Andes, grows wider as it flows into the Amazon Basin. While navigating its rapids and meanders, we have excellent chances of spotting colorful macaws, raptors, and riverbank wildlife.
One of our highlights is Machuwasi Oxbow Lake, where we explore aboard traditional balsa rafts, gliding through calm waters surrounded by lush jungle. This area is home to an incredible diversity of birds, fish, and other wildlife. As we return to our canoe, we continue to observe more species along the riverbanks and in flight overhead.
Overnight: San Pedro (B:L:D)
Day 3: Cloud Forest – Cusco
On our final morning in this biodiversity hotspot, we have a second chance to visit the Cock-of-the-Rock lek, ensuring ample opportunities for photography and observation. As we hike along the forest trails, we search for mixed flocks of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. Notable species we may encounter include the Golden-headed Quetzal, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Black-and-Chestnut Eagle, Solitary Eagle, and Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan.
In the afternoon, we return to Cusco, where we conclude our tour by dropping you off at your hotel.

Medical and Health Information:
- High-altitude considerations: If you have already stayed in Cusco, you should be well acclimated. If not, don’t worry—our nature tour is relaxing, with minimal physical exertion. Most of our activities involve driving with short, comfortable walks.
- Altitude effects vary: Some people may feel no symptoms, while others might experience mild discomfort such as shortness of breath, nausea, headaches, or fatigue. Your body will naturally adjust by producing more red blood cells.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine, as dehydration can worsen altitude symptoms.
- Coca tea is a natural remedy that can help.
- Take it easy: Try to avoid overeating on the first day, as digestion can be slower at higher altitudes.
- Your well-being is our priority: We will regularly check on everyone’s condition. If needed, we can easily visit a local clinic or pharmacy for medical assistance.
- Altitude sickness medication: Consult your doctor beforehand. For mild headaches, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve) can help.
