Historical Southern Peru - 13 Days

Peru is a country rich in culture, history, and biodiversity, making it one of the world’s top tourist destinations. This journey is perfect for birdwatchers and culture enthusiasts, as it combines the architectural and historical wonders of Peru with the thrill of birdwatching in its diverse landscapes. Throughout the tour, we will explore the Peruvian coast, visit natural reserves like Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, marvel at the enigmatic Nazca Lines, admire the breathtaking Colca Canyon, and experience the traditions of the Uros people on their floating islands in Puno. With its deep-rooted heritage and stunning natural beauty, Peru offers an unforgettable adventure where history, nature, and culture blend seamlessly.

Most of our guests arrive in the evening at Jorge Chávez International Airport, where our staff will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in the Miraflores district of Lima.

Overnight: Lima

After a relaxing breakfast, you will have a free morning to explore Miraflores. In the afternoon, we will visit the historic center of Lima, known as the «City of Kings.» This tour includes colonial and Inca-influenced architecture, residential neighborhoods, beautiful shrines and churches, and breathtaking panoramic seascapes.

We begin the day by heading south to Puerto Viejo and Pucusana, where we will observe a variety of coastal bird species, including the Peruvian Thick-knee, Coastal Miner, Surf Cinclodes, Blackish Oystercatcher, Inca Tern, Humboldt Penguin, and Red-legged Cormorant. A boat tour offers excellent photography opportunities. With some luck, we may spot the elusive Peruvian Martin. After our birding excursion, we continue to Paracas.

In the morning, we embark on a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands, home to large colonies of Peruvian Boobies, Guanay Cormorants, Red-legged Cormorants, Peruvian Pelicans, and South American sea lions. This trip also offers the chance to see Inca Terns and Surf Cinclodes. Depending on the season, we may encounter Albatrosses, Storm Petrels, and Chilean Skuas. In the afternoon, we explore the Paracas Peninsula, searching for Chilean Flamingos, Elegant Terns, and the endangered Peruvian Tern. We will also visit the Paracas Museum. If you are a passionate birder, we can arrange an additional pelagic trip—please contact us for options.

For those wishing to extend their adventure, we offer optional cultural tours to Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.

Overnight: Cusco (B:L:D)

To ensure a smooth and comfortable journey, we recommend packing light. For domestic flights, the baggage allowance is 23 kg (50.7 lbs.) for checked luggage and 8 kg (17.6 lbs.) for carry-on baggage. Any additional weight may incur extra charges, which will be at your own expense.

We suggest lightweight, comfortable attire, such as standard field pants and breathable shirts for most of the trip. For colder regions, including Colca, Puno, and Cusco, a light fleece or jacket will be sufficient—there is no need for heavy winter coats.

Although we will experience various weather conditions, no specialized clothing is required. However, if you tend to feel cold easily, consider bringing a warm hat and lightweight gloves for added comfort.

Essentials

  • Sun protection: Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or cap to shield yourself from UV exposure.
  • Rain protection: A compact umbrella and a rain poncho are highly recommended, as weather conditions can change unexpectedly.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and rubber flip-flops or shower sandals will be useful.
  • Clothing colors: Wearing camouflaged clothing is acceptable, but please avoid military-style attire.

Recommended

  • Camera to capture memorable moments.
  • Binoculars for wildlife and scenic views.
  • Extra batteries for your electronic devices.
  • Telescope (optional) for a closer look at distant landscapes and wildlife.

By following these recommendations, you’ll be well-prepared for an enjoyable and hassle-free adventure. If you have any questions or need further guidance, feel free to contact us.

During our journey, we will visit protected national archaeological sites, and our birdwatching activities will primarily take place along forested roads and easy-level trails, making the experience accessible to all.

We will be traveling through elevations ranging from 0 to 4,800 meters above sea level (0 – 14,436 feet), with the highest point being on the way to Colca Canyon. While we will experience varied weather conditions, no specialized clothing is required.

All destinations on our itinerary are equipped with electricity (220V), and power outlets are available in all rooms. Additionally, Wi-Fi service is provided in your hotel for your convenience.

To ensure you capture all your special moments, we recommend bringing extra batteries for your devices, as a single battery may not last an entire day. Additionally, having an extra memory card is advisable, and we suggest downloading your photos daily to free up storage.

Upon arrival in Lima (sea level), altitude is not a concern.

The highest point of the trip will be 4,400 meters (14,435 feet), but the ascent will be gradual to ease acclimatization.

Everyone reacts differently to altitude:

  • Some people experience no symptoms at all.
  • Others may feel fatigue, mild nausea, headaches, or shortness of breath.

Tips for a Smooth Acclimatization

  • Stay well-hydrated (drink plenty of water).
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  • Eat light meals on your first day at high altitude.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for the first few hours at altitude.
  • Drink coca tea, a natural remedy to help with altitude symptoms.

Medical Assistance if Needed

  • If anyone feels unwell, we can easily visit a nearby medical center for a quick check-up.
  • We can also stop at a pharmacy, where a doctor can recommend proper medication if necessary.

Recommended Medications

  • Consult your doctor before the trip if you wish to bring preventive medication for altitude sickness.
  • For mild headaches, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as:
    • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
    • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
    • Naproxen (Aleve)

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. If you have any concerns or special requirements, please let us know.
