Magic cusco Machupicchu - 5 Days

Cusco, known as the Archaeological Capital of America, was the heart of the Inca Empire in the 15th century and remains a city of breathtaking history and culture. Upon arrival, you will be captivated by its majestic Inca architecture, imposing stone walls, and colonial churches built atop ancient temples. The city’s vibrant culture is reflected in the traditional attire of the locals and the continued use of Quechua, the language of the Incas. Our carefully curated cultural tour will immerse you in Cusco’s rich history, archaeology, astronomy, traditions, and customs, offering insights into its remarkable heritage. Additionally, the region’s diverse flora and fauna, including exquisite Andean flowers, endemic birds, and rare mammals, highlight the deep harmony between the Andean people and their environment. One of the most spectacular highlights is Machu Picchu, an architectural masterpiece built in perfect sync with its natural surroundings, nestled among towering mountains and lush green forests that shelter a unique variety of native species. For birdwatching enthusiasts, we can also incorporate specialized birding experiences upon request. Come and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey, where history, nature, and culture intertwine to transport you to the heart of the Inca civilization.

Most travelers arrive in Cusco by flight. Upon arrival, our team will warmly welcome you at the airport and transfer you to a comfortable hotel in the heart of the city. Cusco sits at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level (11,152 feet), so we recommend taking the morning to rest and acclimate.

In the afternoon, we will begin our City Tour, exploring Cusco’s Main Plaza, the Cathedral, and Qorikancha—the legendary Temple of the Sun, once the most significant religious site of the Inca Empire. Our journey continues to the archaeological sites surrounding the city, including Sacsayhuamán, a massive Inca fortress with cyclopean stone walls, some weighing 90 to 128 tons. We will also visit Q’enqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay, each with its own historical and ceremonial significance. After this enriching experience, we will return to your hotel.

Today, we venture south of Cusco to explore the Southern Valley, beginning with a visit to Lake Huacarpay, a prime birdwatching location where we may spot the endemic Bearded Mountaineer, Rusty-Fronted Canastero, Plumbeous Rail, Many-Colored Rush Tyrant, Puna and Yellow-billed Teal, Giant Hummingbird, and various waterfowl.

Later, we explore the Pre-Inca ruins of Piquillacta, an ancient Wari site known for its unique architectural style. Our next stop is the San Pedro Church of Andahuaylillas, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of America”, thanks to its extraordinary colonial-era frescoes, gold leaf decorations, and intricate paintings. If time allows, we will also visit Tipón, an impressive Inca hydraulic engineering complex. Light birdwatching opportunities will also be available throughout the day.

Next, we explore Pisac’s famous traditional market, where artisans showcase exquisite Andean crafts. We will also visit Q’enqo, a significant Inca ceremonial site. Birdwatching opportunities include spotting Ground-Tyrants, Sierra Finches, Variable Hawks, Black-chested Buzzard Eagles, Cream-winged Cinclodes, Rusty-fronted Canastero, and many other Andean species.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Ollantaytambo, a well-preserved Inca town featuring an impressive fortress with agricultural terraces and ancient temples.

After breakfast, we embark on a scenic train ride to Machu Picchu, traveling alongside the Urubamba River. Along the way, keep an eye out for Torrent Ducks and White-capped Dippers.

Upon arrival, our staff will meet you at the station and transfer you to your hotel in Aguas Calientes. The afternoon is free for you to explore the town, relax, or enjoy birdwatching along the railway tracks near the cloud forest. This area is home to unique species such as Masked Fruiteater (endemic), Sclater’s and Bolivian Tyrannulets, Silver-backed Tanager, Pale-eyed Thrush, Black-streaked Puffbird, Oleaginous Hemispingus, and Capped Conebill. If time permits, you can also unwind in the natural hot springs.

Early in the morning, we take a bus up to Machu Picchu, one of the most spectacular and mystical archaeological sites in the world. Built with precision-sculpted granite blocks, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as one of the most remarkable architectural feats of the Inca civilization.

Our guided tour (approximately 2 hours) will take you through the most important sectors of the citadel, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (Sun Dial), the Temple of the Condor, and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints. Afterward, you will have time to explore the ruins at your own pace before descending to Aguas Calientes for lunch.

During our tour, we will visit protected national archaeological sites and enjoy birdwatching primarily along forested roads and easy-level trails. The itinerary is designed for a comfortable and accessible experience with no physically demanding activities.

We will be traveling at elevations between 3,400 meters (11,155 ft) and 2,400 meters (7,874 ft) above sea level, with most of our time spent around 2,400 meters. The weather will vary, but no specialized clothing is required.

All destinations will have electric power (220V outlets available in all rooms), and Wi-Fi access is provided in your hotel.

Photography & Equipment

  • Bring extra batteries, as a single battery may not last an entire day.
  • An additional memory card is recommended to avoid running out of storage space.
  • Make sure to download your photos daily to free up space for new captures.

Cusco’s high altitude may require some adjustment, but our itinerary is designed to allow gradual acclimatization. If you are already in Cusco, you have likely begun adapting. For those arriving directly, we have planned a relaxed morning on the first day to ease into the altitude.

The highest elevation during the tour is 3,400 meters (11,155 ft), which generally does not cause severe altitude sickness. However, individual responses vary:

  • Some travelers experience no effects at all.
  • Others may have mild symptoms, such as shortness of breath, fatigue, headaches, or nausea.
  • In rare cases, altitude can cause greater discomfort.

How to Minimize Altitude Effects

  • Stay well-hydrated—drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they contribute to dehydration.
  • Eat light meals, especially on the first day.
  • Coca tea is a natural remedy that can help alleviate symptoms.
  • Limit physical exertion, as the body takes time to adjust.

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities. We will frequently check in to ensure everyone is feeling well. If anyone in the group experiences discomfort, we can easily arrange a visit to a local clinic or pharmacy, where a doctor can assess the situation and prescribe necessary medication.

For altitude sickness, medications such as acetazolamide (Diamox) may be recommended—please consult your doctor beforehand. For mild symptoms like headaches, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve) can help.

If you have any concerns or special medical requirements, please let us know in advance so we can assist you accordingly.
