Northern Peru boasts unique habitats and stunning locations, combining lowlands and isolated mountain ranges like the Cordillera Escalera, the Mishquiyacu Reserve’s white sand forests, and the eastern slopes of the Andes, all of which are home to an incredible diversity of butterflies, offering exceptional opportunities to photograph these magnificent «flying jewels.» The variety of species makes this trip truly special, and while it involves some long drives, the changing habitats—from the white sand forests in the tropical rainforest to the gradually ascending slopes of the Andes—ensure a rich collection of species for your photography, including high-altitude butterflies. The region’s biodiversity is extraordinary, with new discoveries on every tour, and we can customize a program tailored to your specific interests; contact us for detailed information and personalized itineraries.
For domestic flights, you are allowed to check in up to 23 kg (50.7 lbs.) of luggage and carry up to 8 kg (17.6 lbs.) in your hand luggage. Any additional baggage costs will be at your own expense.
We recommend wearing lightweight, comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activities, such as field pants and long-sleeved shirts. A light jacket will be sufficient for colder areas.
Laundry facilities are available in most locations, and we will be staying in certain areas for multiple days, allowing time for washing clothes if needed.
Essential Items:
- Sunblock and a hat or cap for sun protection.
- Insect repellent to guard against mosquitoes and other insects.
- A compact umbrella and a rain poncho for unexpected showers.
- Rubber boots/gumboots for muddy or wet areas—ideal for getting closer to wildlife for better photography. (No need to wear them all day, as transportation will be nearby, and they can be used only when necessary.)
- A small flashlight for nighttime or low-light conditions.
- Knee and elbow pads for extra comfort and protection.
- A fleece or light jacket—not a heavy winter coat. This is mainly for high-altitude locations. Weather conditions will vary, but no specialized clothing is required. If you are sensitive to cold, consider bringing a warm hat and lightweight gloves.
- Camouflage-patterned clothing is acceptable, but please avoid military-style outfits.
- Shower thongs or rubber flip-flops will be useful for showering and walking in wet areas.
Recommended
- Camera (for capturing stunning wildlife and landscapes).
- Extra batteries to ensure uninterrupted photography.
- External flash (optional, but helpful for low-light photography).
- Continuous light lamp (optional, for additional lighting).
- Binoculars (optional, great for birdwatching and spotting distant wildlife).
- Tripod (optional, but useful for stability in photography).
General:
Our butterfly photography tours take place in national parks, private protected areas, forested roads, and select trails. The difficulty level is easy to moderate, making it accessible for most participants.
Throughout the tour, we will be moving between 0 and 2,200 meters above sea level (7,218 feet at the highest point), with most locations ranging between 356 and 1,900 meters.
Expect a variety of weather conditions, though no specialized clothing is required. The majority of our time will be spent in tropical areas with warm and pleasant weather.
Reliable electric power is available at all destinations, with 220V sockets in all rooms.
WiFi services are accessible at all locations, ensuring connectivity throughout the trip.
Extra camera batteries are highly recommended. Our days will be busy and packed with photographic opportunities, so a single battery may not be sufficient.
Medical and Health Information:
Arriving in Lima poses no altitude concerns, as the city is at sea level.
From Lima, we will fly to Tarapoto, where the butterfly photography tour begins.
The highest altitude we will reach is 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) during the tour, which is generally not high enough to cause severe altitude sickness.
Some may feel no effects, while others may experience mild symptoms such as slight headaches, nausea, or fatigue.
If you feel shortness of breath, take it easy and pace yourself. Your body will gradually adjust by producing more red blood cells.
Stay well-hydrated to support oxygen circulation.
Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, as they contribute to dehydration and can worsen altitude effects.Since most of our butterfly photography takes place at lower elevations, the risk of altitude-related issues is minimal.
We carry a first-aid kit, including an oxygen bottle for immediate relief if needed.
If anyone in the group experiences discomfort at high altitudes, we will descend as quickly as possible to alleviate symptoms.
Altitude sickness medication is available—please consult your doctor in advance.
For mild headaches, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve) can be helpful.
If you have any medical concerns, we recommend consulting your doctor before the trip. We are committed to ensuring a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable butterfly photography experience!
