General:
- Birding Conditions: Most birding will take place on forested roads and trails, with a moderate level of difficulty.
- Elevation Range: We will be traveling at elevations between 200 and 2,900 meters above sea level (656 – 9,514 feet), with most of the time spent between 1,200 and 2,300 meters.
- Weather Conditions: Expect a variety of weather conditions, but no specialized clothing is required.
- Electricity & Power Supply: All accommodations provide 220V electrical power, with sockets available in all rooms.
- Backup Power & Batteries: While electricity is generally available, occasional power outages may occur in remote locations such as Abra Patricia, Fundo Alto Nieva, and Plataforma. In these areas, electricity is often supplied by generators, typically running between 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. We highly recommend bringing extra batteries for your electronic devices.
Medical and Health Information:
- Altitude Considerations: Upon arrival in Tarapoto, you will be at sea level, and we will gradually ascend the eastern slopes of the Andes, reaching a maximum elevation of 2,900 meters (9,514 feet). While this altitude is generally not high enough to cause severe altitude sickness, individual responses can vary.
- Possible Effects: Some participants may feel no effects, while others might experience mild symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, headaches, or fatigue during the first few days. These symptoms typically improve as the body acclimatizes by producing more red blood cells.
- Hydration and Precautions: Staying well-hydrated is essential, as increased red blood cell production thickens the blood. Drink plenty of water while avoiding alcohol and caffeine, which can exacerbate dehydration. It is also advisable to eat lightly on the first day to aid acclimatization.
- Acclimatization Plan: Our birding itinerary is designed for gradual altitude increase, allowing for natural acclimatization. By the time we reach the highest elevations, your body should be well-adjusted. We will take a slow-paced, enjoyable approach to birding to ensure comfort and well-being.
- Safety Measures: Your health and safety are our top priorities. We will conduct regular check-ins to monitor how everyone is feeling. If any participant experiences significant discomfort, our driver will be on standby to quickly transport them to a lower altitude if necessary.
- Altitude Sickness Medication: If you are concerned about altitude sickness, consult your doctor regarding preventive medications. For mild symptoms, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve) can help alleviate discomfort.
