Photography Tour Manu Machupicchu - 15 Days

Photography Tour Manu Machupicchu - 15 Days

Peru is one of the world’s richest countries in ornithology, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, with Cusco serving as the gateway for many photography, birdwatching, and cultural tours. The awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, with its unparalleled history, combined with the extraordinary biodiversity of Manu National Park, creates the perfect destination for nature and culture enthusiasts. These iconic locations offer endless opportunities for photography, making this tour an unforgettable adventure where history, wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes come together in one of the world’s most fascinating destinations.

Early in the morning, we embark on our journey along Manu Road, driving through the rugged landscapes of the dry Andes. Along the way, we will make selected stops before reaching the last Andean pass, Ajanaco. If weather conditions allow, we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Amazon Basin stretching into the distance, providing an incredible opportunity to compare both sides of the Andes Mountains. As we descend from the treeline, we will begin our photography expedition, stopping frequently to capture stunning landscape shots.

We will spend a couple of days in the Upper Manu Road area, where we have excellent chances to encounter mixed-species flocks of tanagers, flycatchers, and ovenbirds. Many species can be found near the lodge, particularly around the hummingbird feeders.

Overnight: Upper Manu Road (L:D)

Continuing deeper into the heart of Manu, we will spend the next three full days around Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge—a true tanager paradise! The lodge’s gardens are a hotspot for hummingbirds, keeping us busy capturing the best shots of both tanagers and hummingbirds.

Our primary target here is the iconic Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. We will visit a lek, where these birds perform their spectacular courtship displays every morning and afternoon, creating an unforgettable photography opportunity.

At night, we will have chances to photograph nocturnal birds, including the Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Band-bellied Owl, and possibly the Rufescent Screech-Owl.

Overnight: San Pedro – Cloud Forest (B:L:D)

After exploring the middle section of Manu Road, we continue our descent into the Amazon Basin, where an exciting new selection of bird species awaits.

This area features diverse habitats, offering incredible opportunities to photograph lowland birds, hummingbirds, tanagers, antbirds, and woodpeckers. The lodge’s garden is a hidden gem, occasionally attracting rare visitors. One of its most unique features is a ground feeder designed to attract elusive species such as tinamous and antpittas, giving us a rare opportunity to photograph these secretive birds.

In the evening, we will focus on night bird photography, with good chances to capture the Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl. The Black-banded Owl is also present, though it is more challenging to photograph, making it an exciting challenge.

Overnight: Amazonian Lodge (B:L:D)

We leave for our first lowland lodge, taking a short boat ride downstream from Atalaya Port.

Here, we will explore a lush garden filled with hummingbirds, providing endless photography opportunities. The afternoon promises to be highly productive, with sightings of parrots, macaws, and woodcreepers, many of which are nesting within the garden.

One of our unique photographic targets in this area is the Hoatzin, an ancient bird species often referred to as the «reptile bird,» «skunk bird,» or «stink bird.» Found in swamps and riparian forests, this species provides a rare and fascinating photography subject.

Overnight: Amazonian Lodge (B:L:D)

We embark on a long downstream boat journey to reach our final lowland lodge, scanning the riverbanks for wildlife as we go. Manu National Park is home to some of the highest biodiversity on Earth, offering countless opportunities to photograph exotic birds and mammals.

While sightings are never guaranteed, this region offers one of the best chances to spot the elusive Jaguar, along with several monkey species.

During our stay, we will visit a famous Macaw Clay Lick, where we can capture stunning images of vibrant macaws and parrots. Additionally, we will explore an oxbow lake, where a comfortable catamaran provides a unique vantage point for photographing rare species such as the Giant Otter.

After this unforgettable adventure, we return to civilization, traveling to Puerto Maldonado, where we will take a flight back to Lima or connect to an international flight.

Upon arrival in Cusco (3,400 meters / 11,155 ft), you may experience mild altitude effects. While serious altitude sickness is rare, adjusting varies from person to person. Some travelers may feel no discomfort, while others might experience mild symptoms such as shortness of breath, headaches, nausea, or fatigue.

Our photography tour is designed to be relaxing, with minimal physical exertion—mostly driving with short, comfortable walks. To help your body adjust:

  • Stay well-hydrated and avoid excessive physical effort during the first day.
  • Drink plenty of water while limiting alcohol and caffeine, as dehydration can worsen altitude symptoms.
  • Coca tea is a traditional and effective remedy that many visitors find helpful.
  • Avoid overeating on the first day, as digestion slows at higher altitudes.

Your health and safety are our top priorities. We will regularly check on all participants, and if anyone feels unwell, we can quickly visit a local medical center or consult a doctor at a nearby pharmacy.

If you are concerned about altitude sickness, consult your doctor before traveling. Medications such as acetazolamide (Diamox) may help with acclimatization. For headaches, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve).

Let us know if you have any pre-existing health conditions or concerns so we can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience!
